Comanche Independent School District partnered with Comanche County Emergency Management to sponsor a full-scale emergency exercise on Oct. 25. The exercise included a simulated fire, active shooter, bus accident and rescue event. Richard Mussey, the district's transportation director, coordinated the event and provided photos and details.

The objective was to work on communication between the local fire department, law enforcement, hospital, Emergency Management Service and the district.

The fire department and emergency management services had to extract the students from the bus.

Two helicopters sent to bring wounded students to the hospital were also part of the exercise.

Hospital district staff also participated.

Shown here is the flight nurse who piloted the helicopter.

The exercise took place in the Comanche Middle School parking lot.

The exercise scenarios started with a fire drill in the school in which students were evacuated from the building. Then there was an active shooter that shot the bus driver, causing the bus to overturn, and shot some students.

"Most people have never seen an accident. Unfortunately, I have," Mussey said. "I think it’s good for everybody to see what takes place during that scenario."
