Woman sentenced for fatal bus-passing accident

Shirley McManners is sentenced to one year in prison and 14 years of probation for the December accident in which she struck and killed 17-year-old Brandy Hart after she exited her school bus. McManners pled guilty last month to a charge of vehicular homicide and apologized to Hart’s family.

According to a commander at Fort Drum, N.Y., the bus driver asked the mother to wait for her daughter to come back to the front of the bus to get her lunch money, but the mother forced her way onto the bus. Some parents who say they were at the scene criticize the bus driver’s handling of the incident and say they were unaware that it is against the law to board a school bus.

NTSB releases 2013 Most Wanted list

The agency’s annual list for recommended improvements in safety for all modes of transportation prioritizes such issues as eliminating distracted driving. NTSB cites the fatal 2010 Gray Summit, Mo., crash involving two school buses, in which distraction was determined to be the probable cause of the initial collision.

The driver asks the student to disembark the bus on the way to school to check out an object on the side of the road, and when it’s discovered that it’s a weapon, the driver asks the student to bring it to him. School officials report that the driver, who's now out of a job, allegedly said that he was going to take the weapon to his bus company’s dispatch office.

Motorist in bus-passing incident must wear ‘idiot’ sign

Shena Hardin is ordered by a judge to wear a sign that says, “Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus" at the intersection where she drove on a sidewalk to pass a stopped bus. She must also pay $250 in court costs, and her license has been suspended for 30 days.
