Texas school bus seat belt law hits roadblocks

The law requiring three-point seat belts on all school buses purchased in the state went into effect yesterday. The Texas Education Agency, which is responsible for reimbursing schools, says it is awaiting approval from the Legislative Budget Board to release the funds.

Report: Condition of state highways has improved

The Reason Foundation’s 19th Annual Highway Report indicates that nationally, the percentage of urban interstates that are congested fell below 50 percent for the first time since 2000. Pavement conditions on urban interstates are the best they’ve been since 1993, and traffic fatalities have fallen to the lowest levels seen since the 1960s.

Go-Ahead Group Plc operates about 120 yellow school buses in St. Louis in conjunction with its partner, Cook-Illinois Corp. Following a positive start to the project, the company’s CFO says the number of buses may double by next year.

1 dead, 5 injured in school bus crashes

In the first accident, a school bus driver went through an intersection and a semi truck collided with it. Four children were injured. In the second accident, another bus from the same district was rear-ended by a car. The driver of the car was transported to a hospital for treatment; the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
