Man sentenced for hitting teen with bus

A judge sentences school bus driver Timothy Whalen to six years with the Montana Department of Corrections with 18 months suspended for striking 15-year-old Eleanore Dykes at a crosswalk while driving under the influence of alcohol. Dykes suffered a broken leg in the 2009 incident.

Police conclude an investigation of alleged inappropriate behavior by aide Bobby Shrout, who was accused of kissing a student on the cheek. After conducting interviews and reviewing bus surveillance footage, authorities determine that Shrout did not commit a criminal offense.

A survey conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration finds that in the past year, 13.2 percent of drivers 16 or older drove under the influence of alcohol, and 4.3 percent drove while under the influence of illicit drugs.

Judge rules to continue school bus service for Staten Island students

State Supreme Court Justice John Fusco says that New York City’s decision to take away the service was made without concern for the welfare and safety of the seventh and eighth graders who are affected. The city’s Department of Education has vowed to appeal Fusco’s decision.

District proposes to change transportation eligibility policy

A referendum scheduled for Dec. 13 will ask voters for authorization to shorten distance limits for students to receive school bus service. If approved, the proposal would reduce the limits from 0.5 miles to 0.2 miles for students in grades 6 and lower, and from 1 mile to 0.5 miles for students in grades 7 to 12.

Districts receive grants to reduce diesel emissions

Iowa’s Bus Emissions Education Program awards $38,000 grants to seven districts. The grants will allow the districts to replace a 1993 model year or older bus with a new one that meets 2010 EPA certification.
