According to a new analysis of American Traffic Solutions’ CrossingGuard School Bus Safety Camera programs in operation, the number of violations on bus routes where a significant stop-arm running problem is identified falls by more than 15% during the school year. The analysis also finds that less than 1% of drivers who receive one ticket get a second citation.

For its school bus stop arms, Woodstock Safety Mirror Co. now provides a full, four-year warranty from the date of delivery. In addition to its left-side front and rear stop arms, the company now offers a right-side, infrared camera with a monitor on the dashboard to enhance the driver’s view of the danger zone.

Ed Bobit, founder and chairman of Bobit Business Media, which publishes Automotive Fleet, School Bus Fleet magazine and many other media brands, passed away Sunday morning at the age of 86. Last summer Bobit had undergone valve-replacement surgery and had been working primarily from home. He died peacefully in his sleep.
Read More →New evidence, which forced an earlier mistrial in a case about a car driver allegedly passing a stopped school bus, striking and killing Hasani Wesley, 11, led to a prosecution plea deal. At issue was whether the bus was stopped, with red lights flashing and stop arm out, when Wesley was hit, but the bus driver’s record and her supervisor conducting an improper investigation significantly weakened the case against the car driver.

Mike Ehrlich, a bus technician from Western Dubuque Schools, won the sixth annual “Best of the Best Technician’s Training & Competition,” held in Waterloo, Iowa, on June 12. Ehrlich will advance to the “America’s Best” competition to be held at the National Association for Pupil Transportation Summit in Kansas City, Mo.
Read More →The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality gives each district a $15,000 grant toward the purchase of a new bus to replace an older bus. Since 2009, through grants and the Mississippi School Bus Retrofit Project, the organization has retrofitted 1,931 school buses and provided partial funding for 10 new buses to reduce emissions.

Read More →Donald L. Francis is charged with tampering with a motor vehicle in the first degree, a Class C felony, after allegedly stealing a North Wood R-IV (Mo.) School District bus. Francis admits to sheriff’s deputies that he was intoxicated and looking for a ride, found a school bus with keys in it, and drove to St. Clair, which is where authorities found the bus.
