Ohio school district buys 3 new Lion buses

Bedford City School District becomes the first district in Ohio to purchase Type C school buses made by Lion Bus. According to Transportation Supervisor Patrick Carney, the vehicle “will result in substantial cost-savings over the lifespan of the bus.”

Karl Simon, director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Air Office's Transportation and Climate Division, shares the news during NSTA's annual meeting. EPA provided $2 million in 2012 for school bus purchase rebates, and the program received over 1,000 applications for the 28 awards made.

36 Georgia districts awarded for cutting bus emissions

The districts were honored at the Georgia Association for Pupil Transportation’s 50th Annual Conference & Trade Show last month with the Georgia Diesel Emissions Reduction Awards. Three districts were recognized for reducing emissions in 75% or more of their school bus fleet.

District to add security cameras, microphones to buses

Boston Public Schools is equipping its 750 school buses with cameras and microphones to help school officials to more thoroughly investigate reports of bullying, other disciplinary issues and traffic accidents. Although students generally behave well on the buses, drivers wrote up about 5,600 incident reports documenting misconduct during the past school year, and officials hope the presence of the cameras will deter bad behavior.

Clinton Global Initiative partner wins grant to build electric school buses

The Commissioners of the California Energy Commission approved a grant to National Strategies for $1.4 million for an all electric school bus demonstration program in California. Coupled with a previous grant, the total of $2.2 million will lead to the development of six buses that will be deployed in Torrance Unified School District, Kings Canyon Unified School District and Napa Valley Unified School District.
