New school bus inspector hired in Iowa

Joe Funk takes over duties for inspecting school buses in the western region of the state. He joins inspector Verlan Vos and replaces Owen Freese, who recently retired from the position. A school bus inspection fee increase that is awaiting final approval will allow the Iowa Department of Education to hire one more inspector.

Iowa bus inspection fee to increase, pending governor approval

The state Board of Education approves the proposal to increase the fee from $28 to $40, which will enable the state to hire an additional school bus inspector. As the change awaits approval from the office of the governor, state pupil transportation director Max Christensen tells SBF that “the increase is vitally important to keeping a viable school bus inspection process in the state of Iowa.”

Bill would expand S.D. school bus inspector pool

Under current law, members of the South Dakota Highway Patrol conduct yellow bus inspections. The legislation moving through the state Legislature would allow the highway patrol to approve other people to perform the inspections, such as personnel at school district transportation departments.

N.J. enhances school bus safety check tool

The new version of the School Bus Report Card, available online to parents from the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission, features improved search functions, and calculates and supplies the percentage of buses within a particular school yard or bus company that were either initially approved or put out of service. Motor Vehicle Commission Chairman and Chief Administrator Raymond P. Martinez says that the tool reinforces the importance of the state’s stringent bus inspection program.
