District grants bus service to students to avoid unsafe road

Officials at the Florida district will allow a group of seven to 10 students to ride the bus to their elementary school despite a state policy that denies bus service to students living less than two miles away from school. The only walking route to the students' school is along a two-lane stretch of road, where no barrier separates the street from the sidewalk.

Teen sentenced for burning Ind. district’s buses

The 15-year-old boy, who has been in secure detention for 68 days, will spend a maximum of 22 more days there, followed by several months at a treatment center for children, for intentionally starting a fire in June that destroyed four Tippecanoe School Corp. buses. If he fails to comply at the treatment center, he will be sent to the state’s Department of Correction.

District struggles to break even with fee-for-service busing

The transportation department for the Colorado school system has signed up only half of the 3,000 student riders needed to break even with the new program. Students must pay $1 per ride. School board officials say if the operation can't meet its obligations for service, they could consider working with bus companies that bid on the service.

Iowa district purchases school bus company

The Ogden Community Schools board approved the purchase of the district's longtime contractor, Stumbo Transportation, for $360,300 after owner Doug Stumbo announced his plan to retire this year. The district took over service on July 1. Superintendent of Schools Bill Roederer tells SBF he believes the district will save money in the long term by running its transportation department and school buses.

Teen fatally struck by tractor-trailer

The accident occurs when Aniya Williams is trying to catch a city bus in Staten Island, N.Y. Williams used to ride a school bus, but service to her school was eliminated. Last week, the state Senate passed a bill to mandate that the city Department of Education provide school bus transportation to children in grades three through eight who live more than one mile from school.
