Bus driver credibility weakens bus-passing fatality case

New evidence, which forced an earlier mistrial in a case about a car driver allegedly passing a stopped school bus, striking and killing Hasani Wesley, 11, led to a prosecution plea deal. At issue was whether the bus was stopped, with red lights flashing and stop arm out, when Wesley was hit, but the bus driver’s record and her supervisor conducting an improper investigation significantly weakened the case against the car driver.

South Carolina stop-arm camera bill signed

Gov. Nikki Haley approves legislation that allows South Carolina school buses to be equipped with digital video recording devices to document vehicles passing illegally. Stop-arm safety advocate David Poag says that "the use of video surveillance in enforcement efforts will ultimately make motorists think twice before passing a stopped school bus."

Georgia district sees 42% drop in stop-arm violations

In two years, illegal passing of Marietta City Schools buses decreased from 192 reported incidents in a day to 112. Since the district equipped 12 of its buses with stop-arm cameras last year, police have issued 830 citations.

Associations support bus safety campaign, legislation

The contractors association uses the occasion to support a New York senator’s bill that calls for increased illegal bus-passing penalties.

Congressman pushes school bus safety 'overhaul' bill

U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) introduces legislation in the House of Representatives that would set minimum penalties nationwide for stop-arm running. The bill would also mandate that all states require background checks for school bus drivers, and it would create a school bus seat belt demonstration program, among other measures.

Stop-arm camera program cites nearly 300 in 3 months

The enforcement program, which currently has cameras on 25 Montgomery County Public Schools buses, launched in January and is set to expand. Of the 272 citations that were issued to motorists illegally passing school buses during the first three months of operation, 128 have been paid.

Stop-arm awareness campaign launched in Ontario

After a student was within “inches of being hit” by a motorist passing one of her company’s school buses last fall, Kathleen Both, owner of M.L. Bradley Ltd., took action, working with the city of Ottawa and industry organizations to launch the “I Stop, You Stop” campaign. Road safety signs have been posted throughout the city, and a stop-arm camera pilot program is underway at her operation.

Bus driver honored as state conducts illegal-passing sweep
