Representatives from five school districts participated in a school bus driver workshop hosted by Gina Crump, creator of the "Respect the Ride" bus safety program; ideas for approaching school bus safety as a team were shared. Crump also held assemblies at Willard R-2 School District where drivers’ responsibilities were shared with students.

Alabama study: Seat belts result in negative cost benefits

Study finds rate of seat belt use of 61.5 percent. Equipping buses with seat belts also resulted in capacity loss of 5 to 18 percent. Researchers suggest funding would be better spent on danger zone safety improvements.

State directors support seat belt proposal for motorcoaches

NASDPTS backs the federal proposal to require lap-shoulder belts on new motorcoaches, citing increased safety for children who ride in the vehicles on activity trips. The association also supports a federal requirement for lap-shoulder belts in the driver seat of new large school buses.

In Florida, the departments of Education, Transportation, and Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles have developed the “Stop on Red, Kids Ahead” campaign.

First Student exec joins NSC board

Linda Burtwistle, president of the school bus contractor, will serve a two-year term as a National Safety Council board member, where she will help to oversee the organization’s strategic direction and finances.
