Child Safety Network offers Safe Bus program

In partnership with the School Bus Safety Co., the Child Safety Network initiative aims to reduce school bus accidents — with an added benefit of generating revenue for districts. The free Safe Bus program, which receives funds from corporate sponsorships, includes a comprehensive training curriculum, school bus safety PSAs, and a GPS and parental notification system.

New York bus drivers gear up for safety competition

Drivers from around the state will participate in the 42nd Annual New York State School Bus Safety Competition, which is scheduled to be held in Valley Cottage, N.Y., on May 18. Officials say the 125 participants will take a written exam and then test their skills on a road course.

Under the five-year contract, Boston Public Schools will continue to own the district’s school bus fleet. Veolia Transportation will be responsible for all aspects of operations, including safety performance, training, hiring and management of employees, and vehicle maintenance.

Kentucky transportation secretary pushed for increased bus safety

Milo D. Bryant, who served as the state’s transportation secretary under Gov. Wallace Wilkinson in the 1980s, passed away last week at the age of 82. Bryant led a bus safety task force that recommended various improvements to school buses and driver training following the fatal 1988 school bus crash in Carrollton.

North Carolina bill would increase bus-passing fines

Under the North Carolina School Bus Safety Act, the fines for such a violation range from a minimum of $500 to $5,000 depending on whether the motorist is convicted of a misdemeanor or a felony offense. The act also includes provisions for driver’s license revocation.

Willi says that he hopes to use his experiences and stories from the bicycle relay to encourage road awareness and safety.
