Another activity entailed evacuating a smoke-filled bus.

The workshop, held at Springfield High School, drew 860 school bus drivers and other transportation staff members from across Oregon.

The Oregon Pupil Transportation Association (OPTA) South Willamette chapter’s Feb. 20 workshop offered several hands-on exercises, including walking through an overturned school bus.

A fog machine was used to create the smoky conditions in the bus.

Attendees got to wear goggles that simulate the experience of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Other topics included lessons from the Reynolds High School shooting and what to expect from police in an emergency. Videos showed drivers making the wrong decision with insomnia, alcohol and drugs.
