Man boards bus, leaves loaded gun magazine

Jeremy West follows a student on the Arizona district’s bus, and he convinces an adult bus aide that he is accompanying the student. After West leaves the bus, another student finds a fully loaded 9 mm magazine on the seat where West had been sitting. Police arrest him on Thursday, and the district is making changes to its policy on allowing parents on school buses.

Kentucky transportation secretary pushed for increased bus safety

Milo D. Bryant, who served as the state’s transportation secretary under Gov. Wallace Wilkinson in the 1980s, passed away last week at the age of 82. Bryant led a bus safety task force that recommended various improvements to school buses and driver training following the fatal 1988 school bus crash in Carrollton.

Bus purchases deferred for Massachusetts Head Start programs

The purchases will be put off this year due to anticipated budget cuts stemming from the federal sequester. Officials at two agencies that run Head Start programs in the state say that they don’t yet know the extent to which their budgets will be impacted. The Patriot Ledger reports that the sequester reduced the budget for Head Start by 5%.

School Training Solutions team cycles Gulf Coast in relay

Director Patrick Willi and others from School Training Solutions, which provides online school bus driver training, set out on a 263-mile ride from New Orleans to Pensacola Beach, Fla., on April 5. Willi says that he hopes to use his experiences and stories from the bicycle relay to encourage road awareness and safety.

Sandra "Sandy" Monteferrario passed away on March 29 after battling cancer. In 1967, she began working at Bergen-Passaic Transport Service and continued her career there for 35 years before retiring.

Texas district invests in tech training

The training was provided for Dallas County Schools’ technicians by Hydrotex, Stewart & Stevenson and Alternator Service. Officials say Hydrotex provided training on the principles of lubrication, Stewart & Stevenson provided training on Allison transmissions and Alternator Service provided instruction on a battery and charging system.
