For some of the drivers it's three hours. They leave the garage at 6:50, first stop is 6:55 and they drop them off, get the elemantary kids, drop them off and get back to the garage after 9:00.

It takes me about 2 to 2 and a half hours to do an entire route (secondary and elementary). It only takes about 2 to 3 minutes to get from the garage to the school and vice-versa. So, If I sub both a morning and afternoon run, I'm on the bus for 4 to 5 hours all together.

Fortunately, I don't live in a super metropolis. I leave the garage at 6:45 and hit my first stop at 6:58. I get to the first school at 7:27 and get back to the garage at around 7:45. Some of our longer route's drivers leave the garage at 6:15 and hit their first stop at 6:30. They get finished around the same time as I do.
In the afternoon, I pick up my last school, high school, at 3:40. Back at the garage by 4:27.

Bus at 6:35, leave bus lot at 6:55 first stop 7:00, last stop 7:40- school 7:45 so 1 hour and 10 minutes total. A little longer in the winter it takes so damn long to get those diesels warmed up.
Afternoon run: Bus 2:30 line it up kids board at 3:00 bus leaves school at 3:10 last stop approximantly 3:48, and back to bus lot at 3:52 The afternoon run is a little quicker, because you only stop at the houses that kids have to get off at. I always stop and honk the horn at kids houses if they are not at the end of the driveway.

I get paid for 5 hours and 35 minutes per day. That includes 20 minutes for pre-trip and cleaning and a 15 minute layover between my morning runs. I leave the garage at 6:25 and drop off my last morning load at 8:50. For the afternoon we line up at the Middle School at 2:00 and I finish up around 4:25ish. I normally drive 85 miles a day.

Well, everything is getting ready to change when school starts back up in Aug. But this year I Left the yard at 6:35 My first pick-up was at 6:55. I arrived at my first of 3 schools @ 7:35 and the last @ 7:55. Afternoon left the yard @ 3:00 for a 3:30 pickup @ jr high and 3:45 @ the high school and finish dropping off my 50 or so kids around 4:25. From there I go to another school and wait for 45 minutes and take them athletic kids that live out of the area home. It's usually around 6:00 when I roll back onto the yard.
But we got a new Superintendant this year and he decided cuts had to be made. He closed down 3 small schools and put us on a split schedule so this next year you can also add an elementary run onto my schedule. |
