Good afternoon bus nuts,
I would like to know what you guys think is the best engine/tranny in a CE.
My personal choice would be a Cat. C7... I mean DT-466. I think the VT-365 sounds nice, but reliability is more important to me.
Thanks for the opinion,
bluebirdvision
PS. Will any of you guys order the Cats in these buses? |

Under no circumstances would I spec a bus with a VT365.
I have heard of too many problems with them. I would get the 466 no questions asked. |
Do the world a favor and bring back GMC and Ford conventional chassis......

I'd spec a DT466 with a minimun of 230hp and an Allison 3000PTS 6spd auto. |

I don't know of too many people who think the VT365 sounds good. As a matter of fact, you're the only one I know! In my opinion, the T444E sounds better.
Anyway, I would spec a DT466 on an IC. For the area I live in, I would spec it with 220 hp and an Allison PTS-2500 automatic. Unfortunately, the DT466 isn't what it used to be, but I believe it's still better than a VT365! |

I do like the T444E better. I used to hate in the morn' ya know when your still kinda sleeping (i'm not the driver) and that darn cooling fan would kick on and stay on for the rest of the ride in.
My new vision is alot nicer in almost all aspects.
In all honesty i miss the 9.0 liters in the S-Series Internationals |

Well the VT365 and DT466 are no longer being built as of the first of the year.
Now we have the Maxxforce DT, almost the same as DT466. And the Maxxforce 7 which is a all new V8.

Yup, you're absolutely right.
I, for one, have to get in the habit of using these new engine model names when speaking of "today's" International diesel engines. |

Interesting, so our 2007 IC RE 300s that arrived spring of 2006 are not considered DT466 buses, but Maxxforce DTs? |

Oh Okay, thanks for the speedy reply, I was confused to a minute. Will these be expected to perform the same, or better?
Is this the end of the VT365? |

Good riddance to the VT365. You're the only one I've ever heard say the VT365 sounds nice. I've got to put up with that crappy sounding engine every day and I hate it. It's like a treat when I get a spare bus with a DT in it. Even though they're a lot older I'd rather drive a good sounding old engine than a crappy sounding new engine.
For trannys, I'm not sure of all the models that are currently offered, but I'd stick with the old fashioned shifter (not the push button). Push button transmissions are just one more thing to go wrong, and trust me, they do have their fair share of problems. Can't beat the old reliable manual shifters in my opinion. |
If all your problems are behind you... you must be a school bus driver. |

Having driven tour buses or "motorcoaches" as some call them and school buses and semis I've driven a lot of engines. I like the ease of the auto tranny and dt466 in my bus, but when I was in the tour bus I preferred the Detroit 60 series with a manual tranny. (I believed back then that I could shift the manual tranny smoother than the models with the auto tranny.) In the semis I have driven I prefer the Cummins M11 with an Eaton Fuller 9 or 10 speed manual tranny (2 speed axle) I don't know whether or not you can even get a Cummins in a School Bus. I will say this about shifting a manual tranny though, nothing teaches you to shift smoothly like a person on the way to a casino boat with an open top cup of coffee. Gauranteed they'll let you know if you even come close to spilling it with a harsh shift. lmao great memories! Mike |

The MaxxForce7 will be replacing the VT365. The 7 is a 6.4 liter V8 diesel engine (instead of a 6.0 liter). I am hoping now that International has a partnership with MAN of Germany that their engines will become more reliable. |

My understanding from the marine market is that the MAN engines are by far the least reliable engines on the market. Obviously International doesn't sell diesels to the marine industry, but the worse thing would be to partner with MAN. Go to any marine forum, they all call them MAN Grenades, and not in a positive connotation. |
