September 12, 2006 - Boston Globe - BRAINTREE, MA --Federal workplace safety regulators have proposed fining the company that provides school bus service to many Boston area school districts $95,000 following a worker death and a worker injury at city bus depots.
A mechanic at the company's Dorchester bus yard died on March 9 after he was overcome by carbon monoxide produced by a gasoline-powered jump starter.
A mechanic at the company's Hyde Park garage was injured on April 18 when a 10-ton air jack used to lift buses struck him.
Investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration found that the company failed to identify and evaluate potential carbon monoxide hazards at the Dorchester facility, did not install adequate ventilation and did not properly train employees to deal with carbon monoxide hazards.
OSHA found that at the Hyde Park facility, the air jack had been modified with the addition of safety chains, which jammed.
OSHA cited First Student for one alleged willful violation and eight alleged serious violations of workplace safety and health standards.
