Three years after fatal crash, seat belts in buses under review

Nov 20, 2009
WAFF News - Video on Demand

DECATUR, AL - The Lee High School Bus crash led to a safety committee being set up to study seat belts on school buses. Now, 10 school systems have some buses equipped with seatbelts.

Decatur also has a stake in this study with a bus equipped with seatbelts and cameras. The cameras are constantly recording data that's turned over to the University of Alabama.

They, in turn, are compiling that data and will release their findings next year.

Some bus drivers from across the state like the buses because it keeps kids in their seats and not running around or hanging out windows. ...

I thought keeping kids in their seats and not running around was the bus driver's job.

From what I have heard specific to your comment from several drivers is that the belts and use required help out new drivers more than experienced drivers. But for all drivers the belts help keep students sitting forward and far less need to be reminding students.

Testimonies from researchers and bus drivers in the seat belt study, 'IMPACT OF SEAT BELT USE ON STUDENT CONDUCT ON BUSES,' most of the bus drivers and some principals who were interviewed noted an overall improvement behavior on buses as a result of belt usage.

"While riding on several bus runs one field investigator noted that students on belt-equipped buses were seated and not roaming the aisles or standing on the seats, as were students on the unequipped buses. In two other instances, the investigator could distinguish between the belt-equipped the unequipped buses lined up in front of the school by observing the behavior of the students on the buses."

A few drivers with seniority (who typically have the privilege of driving the newest, I.e. belt might be equipped, buses) suggested that: belt impacts on bus conduct might be greatest on routes where less experienced drivers had not yet mastered other control techniques for assuring safe, orderly passenger behavior. ~Click Here for source

I experienced the same results on k-12 buses partly equipped with belts, but especially most excellent results with restless children at the lower grades.

The list of unmandated districts installing seat belts on their big school buses keeps growing. School districts in states using belts but not mandated now include Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oklahoma, Vermont and Wisconsin. (www.2safeschools.org)

School districts not mandated but have seat belts installed and use required are not just looking at saving a life now and then. The other advantages of these devices is they continue to carry the theme forward concerning wearing a restraint in any vehicle a child rides, as well as calms the bus, which in turn reduces bus driver distractions, and which in turn reduces crashes and kids/pedestrians run over by the bus.

I'm ready for these safety devices whenever my district catches up with the times. (jk)
