I have a 2000 AMTRAN with a DT530e were the turbo intake impeller separated in half blowing out the turbo charger. This seems to be a reoccurring problem per International dealer and has happened previously at my shop.
I know that with the explosion of diesel performance products, there should be an upgraded impeller available out there somewhere. Most of the time, it comes down to compressor surge that blows them apart. What turbo do you have on it?
Turbo PN 1830498C93. According to International parts Garrett Air Research said there was no upgrade at this time. I asked the question on School Bus Fleet home page, Ask International. They e-mailed for information but have not gotten back to me yet. Were the impeller separated you will find a penny size flaw at the separation.

This is an ongong issue, not just with IC, but with Cummins as well. After coolers and air filters need to be changed out after the impeller comes apart. I don't know of a way to get all the metal out of the system any other way! Clean the duct work thoroughly!
This seems to be a more common occurence than I thought the more I look into it. If, as my impeller is indicating a flaw there may be alot of ticking time bombs out there. This turbo blew up with a bus load of students climbing a hill. Fortunately the oil sprayed over the engine did not catch on fire. What is scary about this type of failure is there is no warning, as with a bearing going out.
Maybe this issue is compelling enough to have the DOT look at it?

Wow. Have you pulled apart any comparable units before failure and just taken a look at the impeller? I'm just curious if a guy could yank a pipe off and see any signs of impending failure.
