I'm wondering what the length of buses are per capacity, for type d transits like the All American. Seems like every other type of bus or RV goes by length instead of capacity. I've always wondered but spec sheets on the BB website just have a range of lengths that the bus could be.

It depends really. If you order a bus with extended knee room your length could be the same as a bus with more passenger capacity. For example on a type D bus in our district it is 35ft in length and 72 passenger(non extended knee room) where as a 66 passenger bus with extended knee room is 35ft in length. |

We have a few 72 pass C2s in my district, some have 11 windows on each side and others have 13. So some have more leg room than others. There is a federal regulation on school bus length, I believe it is 40feet or somewhere thereabout. |

Ya know...I've always wondered that too. 40 feet is max in california however I've heard IC makes a 42 Foot RE that's only legal in one state...however I'm not sure what state it's in. Like previously stated...variable seating is an option while keeping one length of the bus.
This might be a good way to find out. All you folks who like bus hunting...find the longest, legal transit (or Type D for some of you)school bus in your state.

I drive a 2005 71 passenger IC CE, with 12 rows of windows, and I measured it with a measuring wheel a while back and it is 37.5 feet long. We had, at the time I measured, a few 2000 Amtran Internationals, 71 passenger as well, and those were slightly longer... 39 feet I believe. |
If all your problems are behind you... you must be a school bus driver. |

40 feet is generally the maximum. I believe it's FL that makes an exception to allow for a 90 passenger RE.
40 foot RE maxes out at 84. 40 foot FE can hold 90 with very low knee room, usually equipped as 84. 40 foot convetnional can hold 78 (C2 can hold 81 I believe).
Correct me if I'm wrong... |

There shouldn't any federal regulation restricting length, it's just the states that do that. Many states now are increasing their width to 102" and their length to 45 feet. Michigan is one of these, and I think I was reading some Iowa spec's that made this rule too. |
