Recently bought a 1985 GMC school bus conversion with 366 v8. It's a real slug going up hill (i.e. 20-25 mph on a 5-6% grade). I've read several forums that suggest the 366 is not much of a powerhouse, but it's tough and should have a long life. Is it possible to get a little more *umph* out of this engine?

PS...I'm not much of a mechanic, but I'd like to learn!

This bus is most likely equipped with a Holley carb. If someone not
familiar with the carb reaches in and opens the throttle by hand, the throttle safety spring will now be returning the throttle. The Purpose of the spring is to return the throttle to the closed position if the throttle return spring breaks. The throttle pedal will feel very heavy.The throttle will not open all the way.

To check the throttle return- find the point that the return spring hooks to the lever on the carb- about 1 1/2" below that connection the lever should pull into a shallow "V" notch and bottom in that notch. If it does not, the throttle return needs to be reset.

To reset the throttle safety spring;
- disconnect the throttle return spring from the lever on the carb
- without touching the lever that you just disconnected from the spring, rotate the throttle mechanism to the full open position.
-with the throttle held in the full open position, pull the lever into the "V" notch.
-while holding the lever into the "v" notch, rotate the throttle to the closed position and hook up the return spring.

This can be good for some sore fingers until you get the hang of it!
