Does anyone know where I can purchase retired Northern Virginia school buses. Is there an auction or dealer that buys them and sells them ? |

Hi, I live in Fairfax, and our buses go to IAA (Insurance Auto Auctions) in Brandywine MD. |

Most buses that go to our auction are not in working order. If your looking for a bus that is in working order, the best place would be Sonny Merryman's in Lynchburg, VA. They sell used school buses from Virginia.
Could you explain what you plan to do with retired school bus? Providing this information will help us tell you where to better find what your looking for? |

The retired Fairfax buses go to auction "As Is" with no paperwork.
Hey Rob, what do you mean no paperwork? They gotta give you the title, don't they? |

They do but you get no service records or owners manuals.
I think they offer a 5/50 warranty on them....5 minutes or 50 feet! |

Thank you all for your responses. I contacted Merryman, but did not have any Thomas MVP or Amtran on their lot. I'm looking for the Flatnose Models in working order and looking to export them out of the country.
Thank you

I'd also look at Rohrer (Thomas dealer) and Wolfington (IC dealer) in Pennsylvania. Both locations are about an hour and a half from Fairfax County, VA. They both often have alot of buses in stock.
Northern Virginia and Maryland don't have much to offer as far as retired buses. Most retired buses in this area aren't in good enough shape for practical use. |

I find interesting that Nortern Va and Maryland retired buses are not in shape for use. I'd had thoght that given the money that these school systems manage their buses would be replaced frequently and therefore retired buses would be in great shape.. What's the reason that buses from here are in such a bad shape.
thanks

I can't speak for other school systems, but Fairfax buys lower end buses. Our buses have weaker engines and transmissions. Just recently we started purchasing buses with better engines and transmissions. These buses won't be retired for another 15 or more years. Our mechanics take poor care of our buses. When a bus breaks down, it's poorly repaired. In addition to that, our buses are subjected to alot of abuse during there time in service.
If your looking for a good bus to use, look elsewhere. There isn't much good around here. Hopefully some folks from other parts of the nation will comment in this thread. They can better explain where to find better buses. |

Fairfax has disposed of VERY few transit buses,,,and they were wrecked or otherwise shot, though I imagine the '90-'91 TC-2000s aren't long for this world due to age restrictions.
They do auction some good buses....I've seen '88 GMC/Waynes with fresh engines and tires sitting there blacked out...and some of the '89 Ford/Waynes run great too.
Remember the Katrina buses they donated? I'm sure a few made it all the way to Louisiana and actually took a few kids to school.

I will say that Virginia buses, and buses located further south of us, will probably be in MUCH better exterior shape than buses up north since there is not much snow and they arent exposed to nearly as much salt as northern buses. You will rarely see a rusty VA bus, in fact our buses that are 18, 19 and almost 20 years old are basically rust free unless they were damaged and not properly repaired. |
