I read in the paper the other day, with disbelief, the amount of money it would cost to run the school buses an extra week, due to 3 schools that would be required to be open 7 extra days.

Example: 8 schools in town will open Sept 1 and end June 28, 3 schools will open Sept 9 and end June 28 also, due to the fact that those schools that are opening late have to have major repairs before they can open. The ones that start later, will have to make up days during vacation time.

I read that it would cost at least 15 thousand PER day just to run the school buses.

What am I missing? Why so much $$? 15 thousand per day????????????
That means about 5 thousand per day per school to run the school buses about 2 hours out of the day.

Here is the math I did: 2 hours (MIN pay) in the morning @ 12.75 per driver =25.50 per driver for the morning runs. In the afternoon 2 hours (minimum) so 2 hours multiplied by 12.75 per driver = 25.50 per driver in the afternoon.

Driver pay for that day= (25.50X2=51.00) each driver would get aprox. 51.00 for that day (not all buses would be running because it's only for 3 schools).

You figure that about 35 of the buses will run that day at max.
$51.00 X 35 (bus driver pay) = 1785.00 Round UP to $2000.

Out of 15000. (15 thousand) take away 2000. For driver pay leaves you will 13000. (13 thousand)! Where/who does that 13000. go to?

I guess they're figuring in the cost of fuel, plus wear and tear on the buses.

Due to the current economic condition, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off until further notice.

If it is a contractor operation, they bid on each route per day, so for example, say they bid $200 per bus per day to run the route. Under that $200 includes all of the expenses that the contractor encounters, such as driver pay, fuel, etc.

It certainly can be that expensive... it's just how this industry is. I believe the National Average to transport a regular-ed student is around $500.00/year.

According to my boss, the state (Ohio) now uses the figure that it costs $1.75 per mile to operate a bus-NOT inlcluding the driver. When figuring driver costs, don't forget to factor in benefits such as insurance and retirement, workman's comp. premiums and such.

Like 2000freightlinercorbeil said, NOTHING is cheap.

We run about 80 buses, and have a $4,000,000.00 annual operating budget. If you use round numbers (I am), that is a little over 10 grand a day. Those numbers mentioned in the original thread don't sound too far from the truth, depending on the size of the operation.

Live each like it's going to be your last, one day you'll be right!

Wow - $1.75 per mile? Our state only charges schools $.80 per mile for extra trips, which is low to me. I think with our fleet getting old and needing more repairs, they need to charge more. They run our buses to death around here.

Up until last year, I think the going rate was $1.25/mile in Ohio. Not sure on that though.
