Recently found out about this. Did a quick search in the forum and don't see anything about it. If it has been covered before my apologies.
Apparently IF the relay for the grid heater in the intake sticks in the on position the grid heater gets damaged. This can cause pieces to fall into the intake and get past the valves. Not good. Cummins TSB 210032 and Navistar iK1201457 talk about this.
Seems it is not only the Dodge RAM pickups with this problem. This you tube video talks about it, https://youtu.be/YskWQO7kq88 and there will be several links from there. If it was just Dodge Navistar would not have a letter out on it.
Thanks for the info, we have had more issues with the grid heater relay not having enough feedback to the computer and setting the wait to start malfunction code on Freightliner units.
It’s an issue with the Mopar relay. I’ve not heard of a single failure on any other application. I think Cummins and Navistar were just trying to stay in front of any potential issues.
It seems from your post that you have discovered a potential issue with the grid heater relay in some vehicles, which can cause damage to the grid heater if it sticks in the "on" position. The issue appears not to be limited to just Dodge RAM pickups, as Cummins and Navistar have both issued Technical Service Bulletins on the issue. You've provided a helpful YouTube video which further explains the issue and links to other resources. We appreciate your post and the information you have provided.
