Im wondering what the average fuel economy is for a 99 freightliner with a Cat 3126 engine, I have been checking it and the best I got was 6.3 miles per gallon, I havent checked it yet since I replaced fuel filter, fuel/water seperator filter, and air filter this weekend.
what is the actual size of the 3126 engine i thought it was like a 5.9 but a buddy says its bigger. Also is their anything I should do to help maintain the engine it just turning 118,000 miles on it. The previous owner ran rotella oil, but I have read on here that mobile delvac is better so I changed it using the delvac. Thanks for the advise Mark |

A "3126" is, in CAT terms: 3 Series 1.2L/cylinder 6 cylinders
So, 1.2 x 6 = 7.2L, or about 435 CID.
I've seen them running under 5 MPG, and our customer's at the time were NOT happy about it. |
If you want customer service, you NEED an International! |

We have 1 3126 cat in a 2000 chev bluebird 35 pass it's the smallest bus we have avg MPG is 6.2 that is the lowest Mpg we have. The biggest bus we have is a 96 IHC 65 pass thomas with a 466 eng with avg mpg of 7.8 whats with that? All the IH buses with the 360 and 466 eng are in the high 7's Cummins high 6's and low 7's, the 3116 cat about 7.5, IH 444 about 7.5 I thought there was something wrong with my 3126 I guess I'm right in the ball park. As far as oil I run Rotella 15-40 warm months and Amoco 10-30 in the cold months that has always seemed to work good for me. |

Fuel mileage will vary by route and driver. You can't compare engines unless you run different buses on the same route with the same driver. I've also found out that you need to watch carefully the oil you use. We use a very aggressive approach with oil analysis and have found that using a VERY Good brand of oil has allowed us to change oil at 400 hours and still get a good analysis with regard to viscosity and TBN. We have a mixed fleet of mechanical and ISB Cummins and C7 Caterpillar as well as small block Chevy powered trucks , cars and Suburbans.
