The girl had just been dropped off by a school bus. The bus driver and an off-duty policewoman rushed to help her while more than a dozen other school children looked on.
The 15-year-old Te Puke girl suffered serious head injuries and leg fractures when struck. She was crossing the road after getting off the bus about 4pm yesterday on rural No 2 Rd.
The bus driver and an off-duty policewoman, who was jogging nearby, raced to help the girl who was hit by the front of the car and dragged more than 10 metres. The car driver, a middle aged woman, was in shock after the incident.
The teenager was taken to Tauranga Hospital by the TrustPower TECT rescue helicopter and was today in a stable but critical condition in the intensive care unit. The school bus driver saw the incident in his rear vision mirror, said Te Puke Bus Services manager Ed Savill.
The bus had only just pulled away from where it had dropped the girl when the accident occurred.
The bus driver stopped immediately, told the 15 to 20 children still on the bus to stay put, then ran to the girl's aid, Mr Savill said.

Police would contact the children's schools to ensure they were offered counselling.

First, just note that this story occured in New Zealand, where the school buses are much different than ours.
It's a shame to hear that someone got seriously injured like that, but why the hel| would a bus drive away before letting the girl cross? They must not be traffic-controlling vehicles out there!

Maybe she crossed the road to visit someone or to get some other place. Its not fair to question the drivers actions as we don't know if she normally crossed the road once off the bus and even you say that their busing system is different than the North American ones. So lay off the driver already. |

If you notice kids regularly crossing after you leave the stop this is a good reason to have a talk with them. It's not possible at this time to know what the circumstances where for this accident. |
