Jul 31 2004 The Indianapolis Star VALPARAISO, IND. -- Jurors found a motorcylist guilty of reckless homicide for striking and killing a 6-year-old girl as she stepped off a school bus.
Michael L. Hineline, 37, of rural Porter County was also convicted Friday of criminal recklessness and reckless driving. He could face two to eight years in jail with sentencing set for Oct. 1.
Mary Ross was killed in September 2002 after she got off the bus in front of her family's rural home about 20 miles southeast of Gary.
Deputy Prosecutor Mike Drenth argued that Hineline had driven his motorcycle with an expired license and that he was legally blind at the time of the accident. Hineline failed to stop for the school bus, which had its red lights flashing and the stop arm extended, prosecutors said.
