We picked up about a dozen new (2003) IC rear engine transit buses this year. We have an intermittent complaint of anti-freeze fumes in the drivers area. No visible leaks that we can find. We even added ultra-violet dye tracer to the systems. Still no luck. IC says one other district has a similar complaint, and they are working on it. Any body else run into this?
Your anti-freeze smell is not a new complaint for our fleet.Check the heater hoses inside the bus, they may be silicone hoses that permeate anti-freeze thru the wall of the hose.Inherent for this type of hose. We have had to change some hoses to get rid of problem. GOOD LUCK!!!!
All our hoses are silicone, we've been specing them that way for several years, never been an issue before. This is the first time they've been matched up with the Texaco extened life coolant. Thanks for the insight.
Silicone hoses have a tendency to develope cold water leaks. You could have a slight seap when cold then when the water heats up the seap stops and the minor fluid left may evaperate. This makes leaks tough to find. There are spring clamps that maintain tightness as the hose expands and retracts.
