HIGH POINT, N.C. — The state of North Carolina tentatively approved a budget proposal for the 2001-2002 school year calling for an order of 550 Thomas Built Buses to be cut to 150.
Thomas Built, which has supplied North Carolina with school buses for 65 years, stands to lose $24 million of the $29 million order if the budget plan passes. The loss of sales revenue would represent about 1 percent of the company's total sales for the fiscal year of 2001. The proposed cutback is not expected to affect another order of 550 Thomas Built Buses for the 2002-2003 school year.
Thomas Built officials are satisfied with the reduced order, as they'd previously anticipated the order to be cancelled entirely. Gov. Mike Easley announced last week that North Carolina's budget problems would prevent the purchase of new buses.
Meanwhile, the Department of Public Instruction's Transportation Services division maintained that student safety will not suffer from the reduction in school bus replacements.

:( The economy has a cycle that's like that. I remember how bad the economy was in 1992, which was a downer year for the entire school bus industry, I mean I don't know anyone who bought a lot of buses for 92, we simply didn't have the money. Hopefully, the economy will rebound, but with George W. in office dont count on that!

Of COURSE it will get worse before it gets better... Clinton screwed things up so bad it would take ANYONE an entire term to turn things around.
