Just curious to how many districts still have Carpenters still on the road. It's been about 10 years now since Carpenter closed.
Locally, I believe all of our 1995 IHC Carpenters have finally been pulled off the road. I haven't seen them at all this school year. It's kinda sad considering we still have 1990 IHC Waynes and 1991 IHC Birds running, but the state of KY is trying to push the districts to get rid of them due to roof weld issues. We still have Crowns, though they are in pretty rough shape. |

I'm pleased to say that with the exception of the northeastern part of the state, most of Ohio has crushed their Carpenters into cubes. |

I've seen one running around Upper Arlington. 1992 International, I believe. |
Due to the current economic condition, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off until further notice. |

Yep, ours is one of the only ones left around here; it is actually a 1993, not a 1992 and has 227,000 miles. It will be a spare next year after two new Visions arrive in January. We're trading one of two 1995 Waynes in along with one of the last S-series Internationals on the road, a 1988 Thomas. |

Bus 3 is all faded and ugly...used up at 345,000 miles. Bus 1 has been virtually re-painted and will remain a spare for a few more years with a little under 200,000 miles, it's in pretty good shape. |

I doubt modern buses will ever see 345,000 miles. We had an 85 and 91 make it to almost 400K. Those were the days! |

Very, very few Carpenters left in New York, with the exception of New York City and Long Island where there the corrosion factor is a lot less than upstate. |

Here in north GA, several counties still have Carpenters from the 90's still on the road. Hall County has several 1996 and 1998 Crown by Carpenters on IH chassis, and Gwinnett County has a few 1988 vintage IH Carpenters. |

Just learned today (officially) that all of our 1995 IHC Carpenters have been retired. Looks funny seeing a big gap now in our fleet from 1993 to 1996, we still have 1990 Waynes around as spares. |

Yeah, Manassas Park City Schools had 2 Carpenters, but they were probably sold. Buses 16 and 17 incase there is another Northern Bus Fan out there who happened to come across either one. I found a picture in my basement of my sister getting on bus #17. I will photocopy it and post it ;) |

I'm proud to say that the awful things no longer exist here. No buses older than 10 years can operate here. No Carpenters :D |

Our last Carpenter went to auction in August 2011. It was a 92 International 48 pax with juice brakes. That bus was an amazing bus! |
I'll show you my air brakes if you show me yours. |

Disturbing that something like that could pass an inspection.
Even more disturbing that a district could be in such bad shape to have a vehicle like that pull up to pick up children. |

That's a safety feature. The "vent holes" in the sheet metal allow poisonous carbon monoxide to escape from the bus body while in motion.
Hey, somebody loved it enough to put a new Weldon 1020R lamp on it...that's about $25.00...doubled the bus' value. Sadly they didn't love it enough to put a visor back on it, but that was an extra $12, which would just be silly.
You can multiply that bus' value 5x with every fueling! |

Yes.
Really though, it's mostly surface rust (except at the bottom there). It looks awful though. That one may have been retired, but one of its sisters, in identical shape, is still in service. They are good runners...
TB24, I would "like" your post if this were Facebook. |

Missouri has a lot of Carpenters running around. My district has one Crown branded International in great shape on the road, used as a spare. I see a very nice private operator running a Carpenter transit bus that I wish I could get a photo of. |

Thom Ford, That Carpenter looks like she is just broken in ;)
Districts are broke, taxes are high enough.. Plus new buses suck, way to many computers.. no fun to drive!! Here is a pic of 25 year old Mitchell Built Carpenter #17 from two weeks ago still on her route, serving her original owner with pride!! Nothing beats an IHC S series :)
The Carpenter Shield still watches over..

That means it can only stand having 14 passengers on it. Anything more and the floor caves in. |

Either that or they're worried the 14 people will get thrown into the wall in the event of an accident and let the bad roof welds work their magic. |
