ALBANY -- At least 10 children were injured after two buses collided on their way to a class trip at the Palace Theatre, fire officials said.
The accident occurred in Rensselaer but the drivers continued to Albany. It wasn't until after the buses arrived in Albany that some of the children complained of pain, said Mary Mabb, transportation supervisor for the Schodack Central School District.
Albany Fire Department Battalion Chief William Hummel said two of the children suffered "moderate" injuries. The others suffered bumps and bruises, he said.
None of the injuries are life-threatening, he said.
At least four youngsters were immobilized on stretchers for safety reasons before rescuers placed them in ambulances.
The children attend Castleton Elementary in the Schodack Central School District. They were on a class trip to see "Aesop's Fables" at the theater.
Schodack Central School District Superintendant Robert Horan said the two buses were among three the district sent carrying a kindergarten and second-grade class to see the show.
Mabb described the accident and the injuries as minor, adding that the crash occurred at about 10 a.m. Horan said he had dispatched the school's principal and nurse to the scene but had been told that none of the injuries appeared serious. Still, Horan said, he sent word that emergency workers should err on the side of caution when evaluating the children.
Horan also said the parents had been notified via the school's emergency contact system.
"We're dealing with little kids, and I'm sure they're a little nervous and a little scared," Horan said, "so I want to make sure they were taken care of."
