We have a situation with what we belive to be an unsafe stop in the town I drive for, and I'd like to get some input. The stop is on a US highway, 2 lanes, speed limit 45 mph (altho many vehicles do about 60), a lot of truck traffic, etc. The driveway is about 200 feet after an intersection with another similar road, controlled by a traffic light. Because of the sightlines at this intersection, a lot of vehicles make a "rolling right on red" in the direction of the bus stop.
The stop is about 2.5 miles from the school, on the opposite side of the road, and is one of the last stops on the bus route to prevent crossing. Dismissal for the K-8 school is 3:15, this stop is usually made about 4:10.
A 6th grade student who lives at this stop didn't want to be on the bus that long, so his father wrote a note saying he could cross. The school principal approved it, the Lead Driver (responsible for all routing) refused to let the bus stop there to cross. So instead, the father wrote a note saying the student is to be dropped off at another stop, 1/4 mile up the street, on the opposite side of the road (one of the first stops on the route). The student then walks to his house, no crosswalks, no sidewalks, very small shoulder, steep banks on the side of the road, limited sightlines over a hill. The note was approved by the principal, who insists we are to drop the student there, saying the note relieves the school and bus company of any liability.
The school does not have a written transportation policy which would cover bus stop safety criteria. Any suggestions? |
