No, the DT 408 replaced the discontinued DT360. We ordered a DT408, recieved chassis salesmans apologies for not being able to supply the DT408 and recieved a DT466. International parts book only shows DT408 for 1994 and 1994.5 model year.
Well they must have had a butt load of over stock. I have seen many 96s with DT408s in them
Seems odd, I can't say as I have ever seen many DT408s regardless of model year. |

DT408s were pretty rare. They were just a 466 block with less stroke, so there was no real reason (except cost) not to jump to the 466. |

Wouldn't you think a 408 might be a little better on fuel ? |

At similar power ratings I can't say as I ever noticed the DT360 being measureably better on fuel than a DT466. From 1987 to 1993 we bought DT360s as we did not consider the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI V8s to have acceptable performance, fuel mileage or oil consumption rates. In 1994 we ordered the DT408 as it replaced the DT360 and recieved a DT466. International really could not build the DT408 any cheaper than they could build the DT466 and IMO with the release of the T444E V8 they no longer needed three differant diesels for school bus engines. |

I have a question,, I am learning about these engines so forgive my beginner's questions. anyway I have a 6.4 power stroke engine and I now have a DT360 The 6.4 has more displacement than the 5.9 DT360 but it sounds so much bigger and heavier. Also we have the new 6.something Cummins b engines in our blue Bird Visions and those engines are bigger but again sound smaller than this DT360. why? just wondering. Thanks Scoob. |
