During safety classes over 30 years ago, when I was a very young school bus supervisor and DDC Instructor, we discussed the (hypothetical) runaway bus without brakes, one of any school bus driver’s worse nightmares.
Back then, we had some great discussion and debate, and think we identified and learned some of the best actions one could (and should) take in this situation of great imminent peril.
Some of our drivers thought at first there was little or nothing that they could do. However, no one left with that opinion. There is no question that driver actions can greatly influence the outcome of our hypothetical crisis. We also all realized that, should that unthinkable nightmare scenario become a real-life crisis for any of us, having thought about it and discussed it at an earlier date could sure help when literally every micro-second counts.
I'd like to see how today's responses compare with what we came up with then. Anyone up for this challenge? Let's see what we can learn together.
IMPORTANT NOTE: We have this discussion going on the SBF Safety and Driver Concerns Board: PLEASE REPLY AND/OR PARTICIPATE THERE. Thanks.
