We have a 1989 IH 1 ton van with a 7.3 diesel that will not start. We've solved the problem, only backwards. I just need to hear from mechanics on how you would start diagnosing this problem.
Note: The batteries are good The starter works great The glow plug controller works The glow plugs are good Fuel shut off solenoid is good
Thank you. |

Ummmm...... add fuel?
Pretty vague question. Verifying fuel supply would be my first priority once I knew the engine would crank. |
If it doesn't fit, FORCE it. If it breaks, well, it needed replacing anyway. Pullin' wrenches for 45 years. |

Cranks but won't start...I like to look/smell what's coming out of the tailpipe while it cranks. If I get nothing, I check for fuel, if I see smoke I would bark in the compression direction. Let's assume no smoke; check for fuel in the tank, supply pump output, output at filter assy, and into the pump. You say all the above parts are working, I'd check to see if the filter or the injector pump's losing it's prime. I suppose on a engine this old the pump could be tuckered out. You need to check for air leaks up the supply side and in the return as well. Not much else I can think of. |
