I decided to start a Kentucky School Buses thread. It felt as if we were hijacking Fairfax's thread with all those posts made about the KY buses. If you have any intresting facts, news, or pics feel free to post it.
This should become interesting!

Not that other topics haven't bled into others . . .
I don't have many pictures of Kentucky school buses, even though I lived relatively close to the border between Indiana and Kentucky. Most of the pictures from Kentucky that I do have are fence-shots (such as the ones from Owensboro). If anyone else has pictures of Kentucky-spec'd. AmTran/International/IC REs, I'd be interested in seeing them. |

OMG! I had a blast! Sorry, didn't see any of your buses, ThomasER.
Buses I got pictures of: (all buses are KY spec, unless noted) 1989 Ward Vanguard (Not affiliated with convention) 2001 Freightliner BB (Not affiliated with conv.) 2003 Thomas EF 1999 or 2000 AmTran RE (2 pictures) 2006 IC-FE (The highlight of the trip, front view only) 1992 Ward Senator FE (My 2nd highlight, 2-3 Pictures) 1994 AmTran Genisis FE (my 3rd highlight) 1993 International AmTran 2001 IC-CE The Rest: (Didn't get pictures of) 2 1993 International AmTrans 2003 Thomas EF 2006 IC-CE 1991 Ward Senator FE 2 1999 IHC Amtran's 2 2001 IC-CE's 1998 AmTran Genisis 1992 IHC Wayne 2 1990s IHC Blue Birds (IN/ Ohio spec) 1999/2000 Thomas RE We rode in A 1992 IHC AmTran for Millers Transportation INC.
It was such a blast. I loved the 2006 IC-FE. It was amazing. I only got a front view tho., (No sides, or rear shown in photo).
Me and my friends (who have been inspired into buses by me) played a game to see how many buses we could get on my cam. Too bad I didn't get all of them. I loved the Senator too. I got driveby's of it. From the rear of our Wayne. We even got a interior shot of bus, cause when it was up beside us, my friend took a picture through the door/ that window in front of the door.
I'll put the pictures up through out the year. (On my site's updates) due to, I need all the pictures I can get. If anyone has any pictures of any buses that they'd like to submit, please email me @ fordwayne1988@yahoo.com (please DONT attach picture/ insert it in the email. I will NOT open it if you do, and it'd be deleted). Requirements: -Must be a clear photo, of any quality (drive-by, etc), but you still have to be able to reconize the bus in the pic). -Must be under 100kb YOU MUST ALSO INCLUDE: -Year -Model/ Chassis/ Body -Owner -Picture Location - Your Name (I must have a real first name/ perfered last name or initial.)
Thanks, ~Jake~ Must be a bus.

Our district (Clinton County) has gone IC again also. We got 2 2006 IC-CE 300's setting at the bus yard now. They won't be put in service until next school year. And we also got a 2006 CE 300 special needs bus. |

Well just a few recent notes on Kentucky buses. The mechanic I work with at school attended the yearly spec meeting in Frankfort to discuss updates or changes to basic Kentucky buses, and here is what I've learned.
Soon all Kentucky buses will have signs on rear bumpers saying the vehicle stops at all railroad crossings. Also a sticker will be added to the rear displaying a stop sign and saying stop on signal, or something along those lines.
And as of July 1 all bus drivers are to use 4-way flashers at railroad crossings.
I asked what they spent time talking about, and he told me they went into a "suggestion" session, where people who were invited would tell about problems or make suggestions for upgrades. He said about 45 minutes worth of the time was spent complaining about Thomas buses and their problems, while about 5 minutes in all was spent discussing small International problems. Blue Bird was of no mention because they do not put in bids for the state.
Although I hadn't thought about it he brought up something that made pretty good sense to me. A lot of the people suggested for Kentucky to do away with Thomas buses all together, since the ones purchased in the past were so troublesome. And the reply to that was something along the lines of, the only reason why Thomas buses are still purchased is for International to have competition.
So don't be surprised if your (Kentucky) district is buying International, because I think it is very easy to see (here in Northern Kentucky) that IC is the clear brand of choice. |

Now that makes a lot of sense. Hmm. Our 2003 Thomas Freighliners are hardly in the shops at all! Hmm. But I have heard Thomas has a lot of complaints from KY. Whatever Anywho. Thanks for sharing that chris!! ~Jake~ |

How come on most of the 2005 and newer buses they have the regular stop sign with the 2 flashing lights lights on each side? Did KY do away with the LED stop sign? I like the LED stop sign much better than the other one. |

Yes Kentucky is done with the LED "STOP" signs. I wish everyone were. When it comes down to it I think two alternating lights are much more noticable from a distance than the word stop. |

Hmmm..., I wonder if they both were added together if that would make it even more noticable? |

Well also those LED stop arms are outrageously expensive, and if you lose some led's (6 max per side, 3 max per letter I think...) the whole side has to replaced...waste of money in the end. |

Hey!
(Sorry to bring up this topic again)
But I am doing a project and can anyone provide me with the following info:
When did KY (or if they ever did) make a lighted destination sign a requierment, and when did this end (I'm assummming it ended in 1988). I don't know if it was a requirement, due to I've seen a 1984 GMC CARP, KY SPEC, without it. But I have seen many more with it (1970s Loadstar waynes, etc).
A example of this is on this bus: http://www.schoolbusenthusiast.com/Fall_2005/carp_s1700_ky_jake.html (Where the ovaly thingy is around the SCHOOL BUS on the roof cap).
Does anyone know anything about this?
Thanks, Jake |
