Is anyone familiar with the Pulaski Co. school buses? I was up there the other day and seen some 1998 Thomas ER's. They had the dual headlights with the black around them.
I believe Warren Co. has some 2000 Crown by Carpenter school buses. |

I've seen 06' HDX's and 03's. I've seen the 06 in Christian County, and the 03' in Owensboro.
Those buses are really interesting, ThomasER. an anyone confirm these, that'd be a sight to see! ~Jake~ |

Darn, I missed seeing any Thomas HDXs when I was in Owensboro a couple of years ago. Maybe they hadn't received them yet. It seems they were still running Wards and Waynes with some new (at the time) International REs when I was in the area.
I need to start paying better attention to the buses when I'm across the border in Kentucky. |

The 2003 I saw was in Louisville, My city when I saw it, but it said clearly on it " Owensboro Independent School District #603" Its on my website.
Also, a lot of ppl still have Waynes and Wards. We still use our 1990 IHC Waynes, and 1993 IHC Ward/ Amtrans (Yes, some of these "Amtrans" actually say Ward, and have the WARD logo. We have about 10, and then it goes to AmTrans. Last ones built? I dunno.
We also have about 10-20 1996 Ford AmTrans, which is rare. Also some 96' Ford Blue Birds, which are handy spec.

I'll try to take a picture of some of those Thomas ER's next time I'm up in Pulaski Co.
We still have some Waynes in service, and also our Ward Senators. |

Well, I've got to see the STOP on the back of buses. Our new 2007 Freightliner Thomases have it on the back.
Its like this: {Stop sign image} (then beside) STOP WHEN RED LIGHTS FLASH.
I think its ok. Like it better than how Ohio does it (No offense).
Anyone notice all the IC's from KY in the news? Theirs been one in our paper EVERY DAY this week!

(Sorry I brought back up a old topic, everyone)
I am trying to solve a puzzle.
Does anyone know if Kentucky bought Wards in the year 1990? I know they did in 1989, but I've seen a LOT of 66 Passenger Wards (INTL 3800's) without side exit doors, and I know for sure they became required in 1991. Could they just be late 1989s? Sorry, I have one photographed, and its bothering me due to I know my district owned about 300??? (maybe a lot less) of them at one time and numbered with differently without including the buses Model Year within the #. They were all retired about 2002, way before I became in the bus industry. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Also if anyone can help fill in the chart in this topic about what Buses were bought between 1970-1979, it can help a lot. I know Carpenters were bought sometime in the late 60s, but no idea when.
Also if someone could shed light on when the 8 way warning system was required in KY, it would be helpful to me too.
Thanks, -Jake |

I think in 90, it was Wayne, becuase that was the first year that the roof hatches were mandatory. My old district got about 7 of those and they were put in service around April of that year. |

Yeah, obviously thats an old list. I've still been trying to find some 1999 Freight BB's floating around but no pics online, yet. (I take that back I found one but it was really small and you only saw enough to identify it as a FS). 98, 99, 00+ were Thomas years. Actually 95 was a Thomas year apparently, a district runs a 95 Saf-T-Liner ER, i'd be interested in seeing that also! |

1976 = Superior Based on the fact that the Carrollton bus was a '76 Superior on a Ford chassis and it was purchased just ahead of the '77 school bus construction modifications, I think the assumption can be made that Superior was awarded the contract in '76. |

Correct. Forgot about that. 1978 is actually a Ward year, Superior is incorrect. 2010 also has BB in the bid also. |

I live in Ashland, Ky and have been a teacher and bus driver since 1986. I will try and fill in bids for Ky school buses since 1966. Around 1980 on is where it gets dicey as most districts had a choice of two body manufacturers and at least two chassis manufacturers.
1966 - wayne/international 1967 - wayne/international 1968 - carpenter/international 1969 - wayne/ford 1970 - ward/ford 1971 - carpenter/international 1972 - carpenter/international - '71 and '72 differ in shape of warning light reflectors, seats were brown but had metal backs on '71s and '71s had chrome poles behind the driver and connected to the modesty panel 1973 - wayne/ford or international 1974 - carpenter/ford or international - mostly based on body size 1975 - ward/ford on 66 pass. and international on smaller bodies 1976 - wayne/internationl 1977 - superior/ford - this was the year and model of the former meade county bus that was involved in the carrollton bus crash to my knowledge this is the only time that superior buses were ordered for kentucky EXCEPT for van conversions from the 1980s 1978 - ward/ford for 66 passenger - international for smaller and handicapped buses - i am almost sure that some schools ordered the type "b" buses for smaller routes. 1979 - wayne/chevrolet - to my knowledge (other than the '50s and early '60s) this is the only time chevrolet chassis were used in kentucky. many of these buses were delivered to sam cummins chevrolet in paris,ky for pick up to individual districts. 1980 - this is where it gets dicey carpenter or ward/ford 1981 - wayne/international 1982 - bluebird/ford 1983 - bluebird/ford for gasoline, international for diesel 1984 - wayne/ford (possibly international) 1985 - wayne/ford(gasoline)or international(diesel) 1986 - carpenter/ford(gasoline)or international(diesel) 1987 - wayne/international diesel or ford gas 1988 - bluebird/international or ward/international depending on body size 1989 - wayne/international 1990 - ward senators - this is the first time kentucky used "d" type buses 1991 - wayne/international 1992 - ward/international 1993 - amtran/international - however, many smaller buses still said "ward" 1994 ward/international 1995 - carpenter/international or ford - pretty sure all of these were from the mitchell, indiana plant 1996 - amtran/international or ford 1997 - same 1998 - bluebird/international from here on it is anybodies guess. freightliner/thomas and thomas type "D" buses were ordered as well as amtran/IC corp buses with internationals. however, there are some school districts that ordered freightliner/crown conventionals.

THANK YOU so much for the information! That is an awesome knowledge of the states history, and really I haven't heard much about Kentucky buses from before 1985. They definitely had some interesting options!
I did find something quite interesting looking at the state inventory, Woodford County Schools operates a 1996 Thomas Transit (not sure RE or FE) at a 75 passenger capacity. To my knowledge, Thomas wasn't offered in 1996 (or bidded on for the most part). The oldest bus that I have seen in operation from the bid is a 1980 Ford Carpenter which has been converted into a band bus (Erangler).
Also, does anyone know of any D3 RE's operating in Kentucky? I know they were on the bid this year, however they didn't approved the D3 for the BB FE bid.
