What is the oldest bus in your district's/company's fleet? Describe that bus with all the information about it if you know.

We had two 1969 Crown Supercoaches when I was in high school. #s 11 and 12 were both 40-foot long, 90 passenger (tandem axle) models. # 11 had a 5-speed manual transmission while # 12 had been converted to a 10-speed manual transmission. Both had 210 horsepower 671 Detroit Diesel Engines. Both of these buses were out-of-service by the time I was a senior. They were used as parts buses for a while before they were hauled away.

1993 International/Blue Bird, DT360, 65 passenger, hydraulic brakes.

Other equipment: roof-mounted strobe light, 7" reverse lights, under-body storage compartments, inward door, 16 lamp extrior light monitor, am/fm/pa, and fuel shut-off lever.

This is probably the most basic bus in our fleet, even with the storage compartments, considering ALL of our other buses are equipped with push-out windows and roof hatches.

#93-7, a 1993 Thomas International 3800 Conventional. Not sure of the passenger rating, but I think it has six rows with front lift door. All of our Type C buses have air brakes. Tinted windows, black powder coated frames, roof hatches, high headroom. I believe this bus has the flat floor and high rear door, too. I'm sorry that I'm so sketchy on the details. The next oldest bus is 94-8, a 1994 but almost identical.

We have 3 'sister' buses that are our olders. Two are spares, one is my route bus.

They are 1986 International S-Series with Carpenter bodies. DT466 engines, Allsion MT643 Tranny, air brakes. These are our last three with split rim wheels...those nice things that I love to change (sense any sarcasm?)

The bodies are 65 passengers. Pretty non-descript. Tan interiors, elk brown seats (mine has Thomas green seats). Black floor. AM/FM/PA that no longer works. Light monitors.

These old buses are getting pretty rough.

91 Bird/IHC, last year and the begining of this year it was a 93 Thomas/IHC but we had to bring the 91 back for the remainder of this year, it'll be gone for good this summer. After this summer the oldest bus will be either a 93 Thomas/IHC or a pair of 95 Bird/IHC's, just depends on who wins the battle of which buses are going to be retired.

If you have an International, you NEED customer service.

Up until this year we had 3 "sister" 1988 Blue Bird/International S-1700 series buses - two of them were spares and one of them was mine. Sadly, they were taken off the road and sold over the summer. Now our oldest bus is a 1991 Blue Bird/International 5-speed manual transmission, but it's got no guts at all. I still like to drive it when I can (it's a spare) because it reminds me of my old S-series with the huge shift pattern and the inward door.

Our oldest bus is a late 80's early 90's Blue Bird Ford, number 1. This bus wasnt even being used when I first began school back 10 years ago, it just sits in the lot, and sometimes takes a visit to the garage.

The oldest bus still in use is a 1982, GMC, Ward, automatic, 65 capacity. It is only used as a spare bus now.

There is also a 1974, GMC, Ward, 4 speed that is used to hold spare parts. It doesn't run, but it is still on the lot.

Newport Mesa's oldest is a 1970 Crown 5 speed/673 Detroit 78 passenger. Still running well and most driver's bus of choice. Too bad it is such a polluter - it and its sister buses' days are numbered. Our Air Quality Management District has these buses in their cross hairs.

The local school district here didn't retire many buses this go around. The ones that were retired included the 1992 Blue Bird All American REs and the 1999 Thomas Saf-T-Liner MVP-EFs. The 1993 Blue Bird All American REs were demoted to "spare" status, but I'm sure it won't be long before those are gone as well.

We still have about a dozen 82 AAFE's, half of which were route buses last year (a lot of them have been repainted/repowered). At least some of them are scheduled to disappear this year, along with a couple 84's, and 3 1991 Carpenter FE's that nobody really likes to drive. We had 4 originally, but the floor rotted out on one of them, and it wasn't cost effective to replace it.

Buskid: Please tell me those 93's don't have 8.3 engines in them. I'll be heartbroken

Well talking with garage we are gona get rid of our Superior by Christmas of this year. I'll be heart-broken to see it go, too many memories with that bus, just like it's sister (RIP). Godo side of the story, we're getting a new bus, don't know what though, but it'll deffently be a conventional since that's the only thing we buy (cep for the '71 Corsair which was retired in '84).

Well, Im not sure about my dist. right now cause we are making some major route changes and stuff but it was Bus #16 a 1985 Ford B7000 yes B7000 NOT B700 Carpenter. It had a detroit diesel, air brakes, 1 in 1 out door, 65 cap., tan interior, allison auto?, and it was retired just recently. As for this second i think the new oldest bus is bus 19 a 1986 Ford Carpenter, same specs as 16. So.. I was very sad to see 16 go like it did cuase i never saw it at Myers but RIP, buses, 1,2,3,4,11,12,14,16. Our new buses are Thomas Frieghtliners with mecedies benz engines.

Our oldest bus is a 1980 Superior Conventional with International chassis. It has a gasoline engine. It has been used as a spare for several years. It will be retired this coming school year if we get a new bus. This bus is one of the very few Superior's still around Ohio.

The district next to me retired 2 1989 Blue Bird Chevys. A man who drives a bus for them bought both of them and now he has them up for sale. I would buy 1 or both of them, but I don't have any money.

Our oldest buses:

1 1988 Blue Bird Ford with a gas engine and automatic transmission. It's the only gas bus we have left. This bus was pulled off the road in 2002 due to floor and body rot. It had extensive body work done to it and will be back on the road, probably as a route bus, for the 2004-2005 school year. This is a state-purchased bus, so that's why it's still gonna be on a route. Word is, we only need about 8000 more miles on it before the state will replace it. Unsure of the original mileage.

2 1988 Carpenter Internationals, both with diesel engines (DT466) and automatic transmissions. Both of these buses also had a ton of body work done to them. Bus 36 is a state-purchased bus and is still on a route. Not sure how many more miles it needs before it can be replaced. Current mileage is around 181,000. Bus 40 is a spare and isn't driven very much, although I LOVE to drive it. Its mileage is around 172,000.

The Blue Bird was purchased separate from the Carpenters and arrived earlir than them. There were originally 6 of the Carpenter Internationals (numbered 36 through 41), but were retired between 2000 and 2002. When I started in December 2002, only 36 and 40 remained.

Due to the current economic condition, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off until further notice.

UGH...that is so sad! It's so wierd how Superior used to be THE bus around these parts, and now there's just a few of them still running.

In regards to my previous post, we are getting rid of one of our old International/Carpenter buses due to floor deterioriation. I'm told that everybody who was around when they were delivered new laughed at them and thought that they would only last about 5 years...and here they are 18 years later!

I too might as well and stick an oar back in the water...

We sold one of our old Carpenters I spoke of previously this week.

Another of the triplets suffered an engine failure a few months back and it sitting along side the school's corn field waiting disposal.

Mine is the last one left! Whoohoo! I hope it makes it to 20 years!

Hall County (Georgia) still has a few 1985 International Blue Birds. They are 9.0 liter diesel, automatic trans.,air brakes and manual door. They are looking pretty bad now after 19 years of service, the yellow paint is faded and the grille's have all been painted black to cover the rust. These buses will be in service at least another year, maybe longer!!
