I have a school bus with a dt466e engine with 206k miles. Sometimes, but not always it takes a long time to start and when it starts it produces a huge cloud of smoke which disappears quickly. Other times it starts perfectly fast with no smoke. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Thank you

Year and make of the bus? What color is the smoke? How long is a long time? Are there any warning lights on while cranking?

You might get low compression, if you see lots of smoke came from oil cap, it's time to inframe engine.

Definitely sounds like low compression.

how does low compression make the smoke go away after a few seconds and how come the problem is intermittent?

Let me backup. Grey is mostly likely leaky or worn injectors, or restricted air intake. I would lean towards injectors being an 02 and if they are original. Low compression would cause this if you have minor low compression or clogged rings.
