Our diesel E450 has developed a noise similar to an unsilenced air compressor that varies with engine speed. I suspect its related to the belt driven vacuum pump. Its a bear to see anything in there. Has anyone experianced this problem?

Hi Fastback, We had a noise that sounds like you are describing it was coming through the air cleaner on the V-8 diesel it turned out to be a broken valve rocker shaft. It was running pretty good with a broken rocker shaft.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the response, ours doesnt seem to be coming from the air cleaner though.

I believe I found the problem. On the vacuum pump there is a like a diaphragm in a stamped metal housing. On that housing its like it has rusted and blown the center out as I can stick my finger inside and its a jagged hole.

Why yes, the ORIGinal CHARGER is a Fastback
