I have a bus that has had 6 flywheels put in it. The center keeps breaking out. All bols holding the flywheel to crank are tight and lock tited. All bolts connecting to torque converter are tight and lock tited. No vibration or harmonic sounds coming from it. Any idea's?

Need more info! Sounds like transmission not lined up due too bell housing not centered.

I have also heard of some AT545 set ups that use a spacer to mount the flex plate ( flywheel )to crankshaft that had the spacer bored off center.

Sounds like too much flywheel housing runout.

Pretty common problem with the older Mack 673s and a few of the 3406 Cats.

Some were bad enough to crack the block near the lower housing bolts.

Has the housing runout been checked at all during these flywheel changes?

It could be a vibration damper issue, but that's rare.

As rustywrench stated, it could be the lack of a spacer, too.

If it doesn't fit, FORCE it.
If it breaks, well, it needed replacing anyway.

The engine is in a Wayne and the tranny came out of a Bluebird. Now that you mention it, it could be a difference in the flex plate or spacers. Maybe both...

The runout hasn't been checked, but that could be the prob. The tranny came out a bluebird and was put in a wayne. I used the original flex plate in the wayne. But, the age difference could be a prob when making a hybrid like that.... Could be pulling on the flywheel.

I am glad I read this post. A guy brought me a used 545 to install in his Ford bus. I noticed that the park brake and other things differ slightly. Ford has lucas hydraulic. I haven't done the job yet and may not now! I wonder if the torque converter is the same? The one he sent looks like it was submerged in water. I hate comebacks and this looks like it will develop into a migraine.
