POSTED: 12:38 pm EST February 6, 2006
UPDATED: 4:33 pm EST February 6, 2006

INDIANAPOLIS -- Someone fired what police believe was a BB gun or a pellet gun at a school bus window Monday morning, causing a fragment of glass to hit a child passenger in the eye, authorities said.

Police said the incident happened when the Head Start bus was near an apartment complex in the 3600 block of Merrick Way on Indianapolis' northwest side.

The injured child, a 5-year-old girl, was taken to St. Vincent Hospital as a precaution and is expected to be OK, police said.

Police said they believe a BB or pellet left a hole in a window on the bus.

Authorities said they want to question a male who was seen in the area. He was described as being in his late teens or early 20s.

Child Injured After Shots Fired at School Bus

A five-year-old girl was injured by flying glass after somewhat fired a BB or pellet gun and hit a school bus window.

The incident happened at 3647 Merrick Way on the city's northwest side at the Woods at Oak Crossing apartment complex. The bus was taking some Head Start students home.

Police say someone fired a pellet or BB gun at the bus, shattering a window. Flying glass hit the girl in the eye. Police seem certain that a handgun was not involved.

"If that was the case there would have been a lot more damage and the other side of the window on the other side of the bus would have been shot out," said Officer Damon King, Indianapolis Police Department.

An ambulance took the injured girl to Saint Vincent Hospital. Officer King says she wasn't hurt badly.

Another bus came to take the remaining kids home. They seemed to be taking it all in stride. "They acted like nothing happened," said Officer King.

A witness saw a boy who appeared to be in his early teens take off on foot shortly after the shot was fired. He's described as black, about five feet eight inches tall and 170 pounds and wearing a black leather jacket with white letters. He headed southbound from the apartment complex.
