Mom appears in court for confronting school bus bullies
By Jonquil Newland, Reporter
Sept 28, 2011 WRCB TV 3 NEWS JASPER, MARION COUNTY, TN (WRCB) - It was an emotional day in court for one Whitwell family.
Christa Green and her 18-year-old son Tavis, who was born deaf, appeared before a judge Wednesday.
Tavis is charged with assault. His mother is charged with 13 counts of assault and one count of burglary after she claims she boarded a Marion County school bus to confront her son's bullies.
"Assault can be anywhere from physical contact to various types of threats. So it's kind of a broader term than actually someone getting injured," said Assistant District Attorney David McGovern.
"I think they're a little ambitious in their charges," said Green's attorney, Graham Swafford.
Graham believes Christa shouldn't have been charged with a felony in the first place.
"Beyond being a criminal offense we don't think it's that." Swafford told Channel 3.
Christa said she threatened two teenage boys on the school bus last Thursday after she got a call from Tavis, saying he had been punched in the face. However, some in the community accuse him of being an instigator.
"Years and years and years of being bullied, what else are you supposed to do," Green said. ...

Parents taking it upon themselves to do something now, and on the school bus of all places, while claming their child has been bullied for years and years? A very dangerous attempt at a remedy when so many resources are available early on.
Some schools do not respond well to parent claims, if at all, but do respond to lawyers. A genuine case is a money tree for a good lawyer, plenty are often willing to accept a case on a contingency basis (paid only if winning).
So why pull a stunt on a school bus and have to then pay for a lawyer to represent him or her in court? Pull the target temporarily, go to the press for help, or get a lawyer before attempting a 'storm the school bus' remedy.
A remedy that worked for my sister was to home school when her child became a target in middle school. Her daughter excelled at home, entered college a year earlier than her previous classmates, and excelled in to a high paying occupation.
That's a victory a target can live with the rest of his or her life. (jk)
