Bus driver, student honored for thwarting allergy attack

An Agawam (Mass.) High School bus driver and student were named “Hometown Heroes” by the Western Massachusetts Red Cross. They helped a student who was having an allergy attack, injecting her with an EpiPen and calling for an ambulance.

Parking ordinance proposed by school bus driver sparks debate

Attleboro, Massachusetts, city councilor and school bus driver Heather Porreca proposed the ordinance on behalf of her colleagues to allow school bus drivers to park their buses at their homes between shifts. School bus driver assaulted during standoff with parents

The driver in Worchester, Massachusetts, tried to get kindergartners off the bus first, police said, and parents insisted that the driver release all the students immediately. When she refused, parents started to enter the school bus, broke the door, and a 16-year-old girl punched the driver in the face.

District scrambles to staff bus routes after driver no-shows

About a dozen Boston Public Schools bus routes were unstaffed Monday morning, leaving 400 students stranded. The bus contractor dispatched supervisors to drive buses Tuesday morning, “due to a continued shortage of union drivers willing to work,” but was able to cover all routes. The no-shows are related to a labor dispute that led to a strike last October.

School bus funding increased by 36% in Massachusetts

The fiscal year 2015 budget signed by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick last month includes an $18.7 million increase for regional school transportation. Administration officials said that the new total of $70 million is the highest-ever level of state investment in school bus service.

District to add security cameras, microphones to buses

Boston Public Schools is equipping its 750 school buses with cameras and microphones to help school officials to more thoroughly investigate reports of bullying, other disciplinary issues and traffic accidents. Although students generally behave well on the buses, drivers wrote up about 5,600 incident reports documenting misconduct during the past school year, and officials hope the presence of the cameras will deter bad behavior.

District considers opt-out option due to nearly empty buses

Westfield (Mass.) Public School District may ask students who drive themselves to and from school to opt out of the free school transportation system, and let them opt back in later if their transportation needs change. Many of the district’s 47-passenger capacity school buses travel with fewer than a dozen riders on board.
