Four Detroit students hurt in separate pit bull attacks
Santiago Esparza / The Detroit News
DETROIT -- Four students were injured Tuesday in separate attacks involving pit bull dogs, according to Detroit Police and Detroit Pubic Schools officials.
In the first incident, which occurred sometime before 2 p.m., a pit bull ran onto a district bus in front of the West Side Academy Alternative High School on West Grand Boulevard as students boarded it to go to career technical center classes, said district spokeswoman Mattie Majors.
The dog bit three students before leaving the bus and attacking the bus itself, severing its brake line, Majors said.
"That's how crazed this dog was," Majors said. "It was just biting everything."
The victims were treated at Henry Ford Hospital. Their injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
A man standing near the school put a leash on the dog and left the area before police officers arrived, Majors said. It was unclear if he was the animal's owner, Majors said.
Majors disputed broadcast media reports that school security guards shot at the dog. The guards do not carry guns, she said.
In the second incident, about 4 p.m., officers shot and killed two pit bulls that were keeping an emergency medical crew from treating a 9-year-old the animals had attacked on the 2000 block of Wendell Street, Detroit Police said.
The boy was taken to Children's Hospital and is listed in stable condition, police said. The officers shot the dogs to protect the youngster from further injury and to allow the medical crew to treat his wounds, police said.
