KERRVILLE - Vandals cut brake lines on a school bus, but the damage was discovered before Central Texas students could depart on a planned field trip.

One juvenile boy was arrested in the vandalism that also included the drawing of racially charged symbols on the bus owned by a religious school. Two others were sought, police said Monday.

Students at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church were preparing to depart on a field trip April 26 when mechanical alarms alerted them to the sabotage, which apparently had occurred the night before. An inspection showed hoses were cut under the hood.

"Somebody tried to kill us," student Peter Navarro told the San Antonio Express-News in today's online edition.

Etched into exterior paint of the bus were swastikas, "KKK," "666" and "spiders."

Police said evidence from a security camera video led to the arrest Friday of one boy on a charge of criminal mischief.

The bus was purchased last year with a $58,000 grant from the Kathleen Cailloux Trust. It is used for out-of-town competitions and trips.

School principal Berry Neuburger, who surveyed the sidelined vehicle at the campus of portable buildings grouped beside Texas 27, said Monday that students were initially more upset over the two-hour delay the vandalism caused than by the potential hazard it presented.

"Whoever did this couldn't possibly have considered the severe consequences that could have occurred," the school's bus driver, Jeremiah O'Fihelly, said.

At least they caught someone. Here in Eagle River Alaska, we had the brake lines cut on 50 buses in March of 2003. There have been no arrests in our case. Glad no one was injured in either case.

I say "Good Morning" and call them by name, and in return I'm told the same, they go sit down and think of a rule to break, but are quickly subdued when warned of the actions I'll take. They've learned to follow the rules can be safe and can be fun........and after the high schoolers it will be the elementary run!

Thank God no one was hurt. We are living in a world were alot of people do not care for anyone else's life or property. Very sad. But that is the way it is.

KEEP YOUR WHEELS ON THE ROAD AND YOUR PASSENGERS SAFE. AND MAY THE GOOD LORD BE WITH ALL OF YOU.
