SPN 651 – 658 FMI 18 – Injector # Fuel quantity / timing low error
Fault Overview Fault code sets when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a decrease in injector flow during the first 2 minutes of engine running at idle.
Lamp Reaction Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will illuminate when this fault is detected during two consecutive drive cycles.
Associated Faults None
Fault Facts This fault code can set due to heavy parasitic loading such as in gear with the air conditioning on, alternator running, air compressor engaged, etc. The ECM monitor for this fault code does not operate over 118 lb·ft (160 N·m) torque at idle.
Drive Cycle to Determine Fault Status Continuous
Possible Causes
ECM calibration out-of-date High parasitic load on engine Failed fuel injector Base engine failure
Step 1 Determine if Engine Control Module (ECM) calibration is up to date. Decision Using Service Portal scorecard, determine if ECM calibration is up to date. Yes: Go to Step 2. Is ECM calibration up to date? No: Program ECM with most recent calibration. After repairs are complete, retest for SPN 651 – 658 FMI 18.
Step 2 Determine if a base engine problem is causing fault code to become active. Decision Using Electronic Service Tool (EST) with ServiceMaxx™ software, perform the following steps:
Key ON, clear codes.
Verify all engine accessories are OFF (i.e. air conditioning, radio, and headlights).
Start engine and let idle for 3 minutes.
While engine is idling, go to Default session > All Signals tab.
Verify Actual Engine Torque signal value is below 118 lb·ft (160 N·m).
Key-On, Engine-Off (KOEO), check Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) list for SPN 651 – 658 FMI 18. Yes: Go to Step 3. Is EST DTC list SPN 651 – 658 FMI 18 active or pending? No: Go to Step 5.
Step 3 Check for engine mechanical failure. Decision Check for engine mechanical failure. Perform Relative Compression Test Plus (RCT+) . Yes: Make indicated repair if CPA indicates a failure. After repairs are complete, retest for original problem. Did the Graph Analysis section identify a failure or did the tool issue a Warranty Authorization Code (WAC)? No: Go to Step 4.
Step 4 Check for a weak power cylinder. Decision Perform CPA Hot Idle Test . Yes: Remove valve cover and inspect valve train. If valve train is in good condition, replace injector for suspect cylinder. Does test indicate a weak cylinder? No: Go to Step 5.
Step 5 Determine if high parasitic load is causing fault code to become active. Decision Using Electronic Service Tool (EST) with ServiceMaxx™ software, perform the following steps:
Key ON, clear codes.
Start engine.
Verify all engine accessories are ON (i.e. air conditioning, radio, and headlights), and transmission is in gear.
Let engine idle for 3 minutes.
While engine is idling, go to Default session > All Signals tab.
Verify Actual Engine Torque signal value is below 118 lb·ft (160 N·m).
If Actual Engine Torque signal value is above 118 lb·ft (160 N·m), turn off accessories till engine torque is below threshold. Yes: High parasitic load causing fault code to set. Allow engine to idle for a minimum of 3 minutes before turning on any accessories or putting transmission into gear. Did SPN 651 – 658 FMI 18 become active or pending? No: End diagnostics, retest for 651 – 658 FMI 18.
End Diagnostic Tests After performing diagnostic steps, if SPN 651 – 658 FMI 18 remains, verify if step was completed correctly and proper decision was made. Notify supervisor for further action.
