Hello,
Recently we have been down mechanics and are short staffed. We had one guy retire and one guy pass. We have a few questions before having to send these buses off to a bigger shop. We are in dire need of buses like most districts.
Question 1:
Bluebird All American 2006 with air door. Red loading lights will not come on when you open the door. Master switch is on, etc. Yellow lights won't go off to activate the reds. We have tried changing the door switch, the warning light switch, Weldon 7000 flasher unit, and master switch. Looking for any other suggestions on what to do before having to send the bus off to bigger shop.
Question 2: Bluebird All American 2003 with air door. Door when you open it opens fine, but when you hit close, it is super super slow closing. We have tried changing door switch, coil connector on air rim. No luck on either of those changes doing anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you! |

2006 that won't switch to red: Remove panel over entrance door, look for wire broken off at air switch on door cylinder. VERY common and 100% caused by a poor design. The wire flexes back and forth every time you cycle the door and it usually ends up breaking off at the crimp connector that attaches it to the switch up there. We extend the length of the wires and zip tie to cylinder thus causing the wire to flex in the middle instead of at the crimp end.
If you don't find an obvious defect and can verify that one wire from the switch is in fact connected to a good ground up there, use a screwdriver or short wire to jump across the terminals of that switch up there and see if the system switches to red. Could be a bad switch. If it doesn't switch to red, you can ground out the pin on the Weldon flasher that senses the door. If your bus is made to only turn on the reds after the ambers, ground pin #9. If your bus is supposed to turn on the reds anytime the door is open and "master" is on, then ground pin #10. Lights switch to red? You have a break in the wire between there and the top of the door. Have fun with trying to find that. Run a new wire and move on with your life.
The 03 with a slow door I speculate simply needs the air valves up top of the door adjusted. It could be severely worn door bushings, but start with air pressure adjustments up there. Should be little white knobs with a silver jam nut under them.

Yep...exactly what Thomasbus24 said. The wires going to the solenoids on the air cylinder break and have to be zip tied differently. On the other one, the air valves just control the amount of air that is allowed to exhaust when opening or closing. There is one valve at each end of the air cylinder. 1 for open, 1 for close. |
