I will be attending an accident review forum on the accident that happened to a local school district's school bus. They are wanting to review how they handled things and discuss what went right and what went wrong. Anyone have any questions to ask?

How were the passengers transported after the crash? I've heard it suggested to send 2 buses to the scene, one to take them the ones who are OK on home (or back to school) and one to go to the hospital.

When we rolled ours with 41 on board, we sent a bus right away, it beat the first ambulance there. We took all to the hospital with a police escort. Worked really well and something to consider doing if needed.

I think there are maybe 10 ambulances in the entire county here...just not practical for a bunch of minor injury.

I would ask what the districts procedures are in the event of an accident? Do they have it in writing and are the drivers trained/updated on it regularly? Does the driver call into a dispatch and have them call 911 or is it the drivers responsibility? Do they have an accident report kit on every bus and do the drivers know what is in them and how to fill them out? I think that once you find out what they did you will be able to come up more specific questions. My main thing would be the training, for the drivers and office staff.

Do every bus have an up to date listing of who is assigned to the bus?

This was a ballgame bus but I think these questions are great ones. Keep them coming!

Since it was a ball game bus:

If the driver is a teacher or coach are they trained and doing a property pre-trip?
Do they have all the important contact numbers, IE., dispatch, director, mechanic, ect.
Are they trained in "what to do incase of an accident?" Emergency evacuations. Who does a student contact in case the driver is incapacitated?

No matter who is driving:
A roster of who is on the bus with emergency contact information for the students.
Again emergency contact numbers for your district.

Not sure about the rest of the country but here in California, we are required to call CHP for any school bus accident. One of the first things they do is a seating chart. They want to know where everyone was sitting at the time of the accident. We train our drivers to make sure the kids don't move all around the bus after an accident. Each bus has a blank seating chart that the driver can fill out while waiting for CHP. We also keep emergency numbers, (CHP, mechanic, dispatch, superintendent, etc), in each bus.
Also, be careful how much you say over the 2 way radios if you use them. We had an incident a long time ago before I started working here, where a little girl got her arm stuck in the entrance door and ended up getting drug for a ways down the road. Luckily, she ended up not being hurt, but the mom saw the whole thing happen. Anyways the driver called dispatch on the radio and CHP was immediately called. The transportation director immediately dropped everything and flew to where the bus was stopped - maybe 10 min. away. When he got there, reporters from the local newspaper were already there on the bus talking to kids and taking their reports and statements. (Not sure why the driver let them on the bus - maybe too shaken up to think straight?) Anyways, transportation director had to kick them out of the bus until CHP got there. Apparently the reporters were listening to the scanner and heard what happened.
