I have a 2006 IC RE 300 . During the school year we had an injector quit . Service pro said No 5 was shorted . I didn't have time to fix it so we sent it to the dealer . The dealer called and said IDM was bad . If IDM is bad wouldn't it turn on the check engine light ? If it is bad wouldn't we have some drivability issues ? The driver told me it did smoke at times . We just drove the bus 80 miles and ran fine . Are we being told the truth here ? Thanks
I assume ServiceMaxx indicated that it had a DTC of 455 - Cylinder 5 High Side shorted to ground or Vbat . The dealer should have used an ohm meter and starting at the injector check the resistance at the high side coil to ground and to Vbat . Then work backwards , under valve cover harness , valve cover gasket then the harness from the IDM . If no short is found in the harness and injector then disconnect harness from IDM , if short is still there with IDM disconnected from injector harness then the IDM output # 5 FET output is shorted internally requiring the IDM replacement.
