Oley Valley school bus driver commended for heroism at school board meeting

By Matthew Reichl, Times Editor

DEC 19, 2010
Boyertown Area Times
OLEY, PA -- “Nothing short of heroic” is how Oley Valley Middle School Principal Daniel Marks described Michelle Thomas’ actions.

During the Oley Valley School Board meeting Wednesday night, Marks and Elementary Principal Sheila Simyak commended Thomas, a school bus driver, for her quick thinking and safe driving.

On Dec. 7, Thomas was transporting six kindergarten students along Route 73, when an elderly woman allegedly drove into the path of the school bus, leaving the driver with only moments to react.

Marks said the school bus had ended up in a ditch along the road, but Thomas and the students uninjured.

“I was very amazed with our bus driver, there was no way to get off road [in time],” he told the school board.

Thomas decided instead of swerving to wait until the right moment to move the bus on the side of the road. Her next move was to make sure all the students were ok.

“I can say as a parent of two children, ‘wow,’” Marks said.

Simyak presented Thomas with six roses for each child she saved.

Well done! It is nice to see administration recognise these things.

Unlike when I had a 38th year driver take the bus into a field to avoid a collision with a snowplow. Without a doubt it would have sliced the bus open like a tin can. No injuries and only minor cosmetic damage to the bus. All the Superintendant wanted to know what when the TD was going to suspend her for running off the road. (He was put in his place VERY quickly).
